Kaitoge (Sea Wisteria)
Kaitoge takes its name from a Japanese term for octopus eggs, meaning “sea wisteria”. Above, a mother octopus guards her hanging eggs until they hatch, nearing the end of her life. Below, a mermaid plants sea flowers on a dolphin that has died, as its body becomes a source of new life.
The mermaid’s gesture expresses respect for a life that has ended. Through her planting, I express my reverence for nature, where each life supports others. For me, there is something sacred in this continuity and in the diversity of life.
Hand embroidery on two layers of translucent fabric, with shimmering threads and beads, creates depth, shadows and a sense of suspension. I invite viewers to look closely and share my wonder at the connections through which life continues. (2024)
